Advisor, Communications and Marketing

Location: Washington DC office Pathfinder International:

Summary:  Responsible for the management of a global pool of inhouse and external sources who contribute to the communications of the organization’s mission. Holds management and budgeting responsibilities for services rendered under your control. Appoint in-house staff who will collect content, secure creative, and manage external content and creative development through accessing a global pool of in-house talent and an extensive pool of freelance journalists, photographers, editors, technical writers, proofreaders, videographers, graphic designers, desktop publication specialists, and event planners. Each of these experiences will not only raise awareness of Pathfinder’s mission but our ability to secure funding. Specific areas of expertise may include Content Development or Creative Production. You may also be assigned to a specific global program ensuring such programs are branded, and advanced in line with donor requirements and Pathfinder message.

Key Job Outcomes:

  1. Strategic Direction: Create effective and comprehensive plans for organizational marketing and communications efforts. Partners with all business units and country offices to establish communications objectives.
  2. Communications Strategy: Oversees and guides plans and strategies to achieve country and project-specific communications objectives. Leads conceptualization and oversees writing, editorial, production, dissemination and publications management of communication materials (including online and email communications strategies) in support of the Pathfinder International brand strategy. Ensures consistency in the language, look and feel of all materials (including press releases) targeted to external audiences.
  3. Editorial Direction: Delivers editorial direction to promote thought leadership. Leads and manages annual editorial calendar to guide coordinated organizational efforts.
  4. Communications Planning Execution: Develops and guides internal creative services, including website, social media, and print collateral materials. Oversees the creation of compelling content and design. Ensures timely production of Pathfinder’s newsletter, annual report, e-newsletter, brochures, press releases, success stories and other communications vehicles geared toward donor and or constituency building efforts. Provides marketing, communications media support for all Pathfinder initiatives.
  5. Brand Awareness and Loyalty: Serves as overall brand manager. Represents Pathfinder at professional communications meetings, international conferences and donor events. Continually builds and maintains senior level partnerships with regional, national, and international organizations.
  6. Research: Supports relevant market research; uses market research and revenue and marketing metrics for communications planning. Tracks and investigates new communications opportunities and applications.
  7. Leadership, Management and Supervision: Identifies, recruits and engages marketing and communications professionals. Develops and manages the Communications budget. Contributes to the development of project proposals and budgets to ensure resources for strategic positioning and visibility efforts.
  8. External Relations Liaison: Serves as Pathfinder’s point of contact for external communications who forwards communication requests to appropriate departments. Builds and strengthens collaborative relationships with internal business units and teams.
  9. Vendor Oversight: Provides content and editorial oversight for consultants working on planning and message development, managing services for materials, designers, printers, photographers and media. Oversees and guides vendor relationships.
  10. Project Management and Participation: Leads, manages or participates in cross functional project teams.

  • Leadership and Management: Proven ability to lead, supervise and coach members of staff in different locations.
  • Job-Specific Software Applications: Mastery of knowledge of software applications for web based solutions, social media platforms, and apps.
  • Project Management Planning and Management: Proven ability to plan and manage cross-functional initiatives.


Minimally Required Organizational Competencies:

  • Software Applications: Mastery of knowledge of Microsoft products, including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook.

  • Languages: Proven ability to write and speak using the English language
  • Communication: Advanced oral and written communication skills using different forms of media. Ability to translate complex concepts to individuals at all levels.
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Services: Advanced knowledge of family planning and reproductive health principles, practices and services of assigned program, including program strategies and indicators.
  • Passion for Sexual and Reproductive Health Services: Demonstrated commitment to family planning, reproductive health services, gender, maternal, child health services, and eradication of harmful traditional practices
  • Influencing and Customer Service Skills: Proven ability to influence using diplomacy skills with key stakeholders. In-depth demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Organization, Planning and Multi-tasking: Advanced organizational and planning skills, project planning and management skills. Proven ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and multi-task with minimal supervision. Proven ability to coordinate activities.

Basic Requirements (Candidates must meet basic requirements to be considered for this job.)

Minimally Required Education, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or a combination of education and experience that yields the required competencies
  • 10 years’ professional communication and strategic marketing experience with progressive management and leadership, preferably in family planning, reproductive health, and international health
  • Work experience with a multinational organization
  • Experience leading global staff and vendors
  • Knowledge of communications softwares
  • Prefer: Master’s degree in related field
  • Prefer: Experience living or working in developing countries that aids in the understanding of program context, field realities, and technical needs preferred
