The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a not-for-profit, international membership organisation that is working to transform markets to make sustainable palm oil the norm. To do this, we have united stakeholders from all sectors of the palm oil supply chain and civil society to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil production and procurement.


Since its inception in 2004, RSPO has enjoyed rapid growth and today has close to 5,000 members from 99 countries, including oil palm producers, processors, traders, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, banks, and non-governmental organisations. Thanks to the commitments and actions of these members, nearly 20% of the global supply of palm oil has already been certified as sustainable.


At RSPO, we believe that a not-for-profit organisation is made successful by the passion, skills, and expertise of its members and staff. Reporting to the Director of Market Transformation, the Deputy Director of Indonesia will be fully responsible for managing RSPO's operations in Indonesia and coordinating its activities with other RSPO global offices. The Deputy Director of Indonesia will ensure that RSPO's regional direction is coherent and fully aligned with the organisation's global positioning and engage with key stakeholders and policymakers to ensure that RSPO achieves its vision to make sustainable palm oil the norm.


The Deputy Director of Indonesia is also responsible for setting annual targets on market transformation in terms of membership growth and increased production and uptake of sustainable palm oil, providing assurance in the chain of custody for sustainable palm oil, and maintaining RSPO's reputation in the region. The Deputy Director will manage a team of 20+ specialists and work as part of a global senior management team to deliver the strategic plan.


The location of this role is Indonesia   



·        To manage the daily operational activities of RSPO's office in Indonesia, including people and finance management, and provide guidance to the RSPO's team in Indonesia, including communicating clear directions and roles and responsibilities.

·        To oversee the development and implementation of the region's work plan and budget.

·        To coordinate the work of RSPO's office in Indonesia with the RSPO Secretariat in Kuala Lumpur and other RSPO regional offices to ensure full alignment with the objectives of the relevant departments, as prescribed by RSPO 's senior management.

·        To build the credibility of the RSPO brand in Indonesia through engagement with stakeholders, which include but are not limited to government/non-governmental/intergovernmental organisations, palm oil-related organisations, smallholder groups, etc.

·        To engage proactively with key opinion leaders to influence the necessary improvement of regulatory frameworks to further support the production and use of sustainable palm oil in Indonesia.

·        To implement the RSPO operational plan based on the Theory of Change for Indonesia and ensure that the timelines and outputs are in line with the operational plan.

·        To develop specific country/region Shared Responsibility (SR) strategies with local partners, in collaboration and alignment with the Shared Responsibility Unit.

·        To lead in identifying key risk areas for the organisation in the region and to handle these issues both proactively and reactively where necessary.

·        To provide support, direction, and guidance to the smallholder programmes, complaints resolution, and dispute settlements, and measure impacts of RSPO's activities in Indonesia.

·        To have a full understanding of Indonesia's oil palm landscapes, and work with the Assurance, Technical, and Standards teams to identify and develop opportunities for growth.

·        To oversee and provide direction on the communication and marketing activities of RSPO and the RSPO Trademark in Indonesia.

·        To identify and participate in key events that are strategic to RSPO's mandate, and be the spokesperson for RSPO at relevant stakeholder engagement, as well as provide advice and input of strategic and policy significance, to facilitate decision-making.

·        To support and provide insights on technical activities and National Interpretations to RSPO members in Indonesia.

·        To prepare and submit an annual operational budget for Indonesia to the Director of Market Transformation for review and approval, and manage effectively within this budget and report accurately on the progress made and the challenges encountered.

·        To lead and manage the biannual RSPO's Indonesian Conference in close collaboration with the relevant partner(s), stakeholders, and the global RSPO Secretariat team.

·        To coach and motivate staff, identify learning opportunities for staff development and advancement, track work progress to build staff competencies on the job, and encourage motivation, proactiveness, and job satisfaction of all direct reports.

·        Apart from the duties stated above, perform any duty or duties reasonably assigned.



·        A bachelor's degree in the field of Environmental Science/Management, Agronomy,

·        Sustainability, or other related majors.

·        At least 12 years of working experience, including general management at a senior level and a track record of building, leading, and evolving high performing teams.



·        Familiar with palm oil sustainability standards (e.g. RSPO, MSPO, ISPO, etc).

·        Good understanding of RSPO's certification process, farming practices, and supply chains.

·        Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and/or projects.

·        Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).



·        Strong business acumen with the ability to synthesise key themes and deliverables from objectives and strategies defined by the senior management.

·        Excellent interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication, negotiation, cross-team project management, and consensus-building.

·        Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and/or projects.

·        Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to be effective independently.

·        Ability to plan, allocate, and monitor resources to meet fiscal targets and ensure proper budget management.

·        Emotional maturity, patience, curiosity, and a sustained willingness to change one's mind.

·        Demonstrated ability to achieve high-performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

·        Forward-looking thinker, who actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions.

·        Fluency in English and Bahasa Indonesia, written and spoken.
